What is a blog?

News is one of the fundamental pillars of our society. Without news, no-one would know when anything had happened, unless they had witnessed it themselves. News is important, and so is the way we are given it. Now, news is changing. It’s going online.

One Way

People have received news pretty much the same way for a long time. People would read a newspaper, or it would be read out on radio or television. The news was a one way thing, you couldn’t change it, you couldn’t share your own opinions.

It was Richard Salant, then president of CBS news, who once said “Our reporters do not cover stories from their point of view. They are presenting from nobody’s point of view.” This is the way that broadcast news has been pretty much since its invention: Just the facts. But this is changing, not in the broadcast world, but online.

New venue, same content.

Traditional news companies have had websites for a while now, and it is pretty much just an online newspaper, sometimes with supplementary audio or video, but still presented from that neutral point of view. The thing is, people have opinions, and people like hearing others opinions, It is the basis of conversation. A new media platform had to be created, and in 1997, the blog was born.

Blog

A blog is a website, usually with a main page consisting of ‘posts’, arranged with he mot recent posts at the top. The term blog is a contraction of the words ‘web’ and ‘log’. Traditionally, blogs have been used as online diaries, as implied by the name, but more recently, they have become an outlet for normal people to share their opinions on current events, and, in some cases, to report things before the media does.

Blogs by the News

It’s not all bad news for the media, though. There are many blogs by the traditional providers of news, and the speed of blogging makes it a great new tool in the toolkit of the media. Because a blog can be updated virtually instantly, blogs are used to send out news faster than any other method of distribution.

The future for news media

If a blog is the future of journalism, why do we need traditional media? Well, although a blog is fantastic in the way it can allow anyone to report the news from their own opinion. This can also introduce bias, and sometimes makes blogs unreliable, but some are trustworthy. Also, some people also just make up news, either for satirical purposes, or just to annoy. Traditional methods of delivery will still stay; blogging will just be added to the increasing list of ways we can get news.
